Who Can Apply:
- Be a citizen of the United States of America (permanent residents and US Nationals are not eligible).
- Be at least 18 years of age, but not yet 30 years, by 30 September (those whose 30th birthday is on 1 October may apply).
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (not necessarily in the US) before beginning study as a Mitchell Scholar.
Award Amount:
This award pays for one year of postgraduate study. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. You must have completed your undergraduate studies by the time the scholarship is to be put into affect. You may study at one of the following institutions:
- Trinity College Dublin
- University College Cork
- University College Dublin
- NUI Galway
- University College Maynooth
- University of Limerick
- Dublin City University
- Queen’s University Belfast
- The University of Ulster
History:
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is named in honor of the former United States Senator who served as Chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland. Under his leadership, a historic accord was agreed upon by the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom, ending decades of conflict.
This scholarship brings exceptional students to study in Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarship actively promotes the spirit of community between the Scholars and the Irish communities in which they live and study. For students with high academic achievement, a record of leadership and a commitment to service and community, the Mitchell Scholarship offers a unique opportunity to further one’s education within Ireland.
How to Apply:
Notice your application will not be complete until all components are complete and received.
1. You must be nominated by your area’s faculty representative. Contact your representative to see if you may be considered for this nomination. Your representative will also be able to give you more information about the nomination process.
2. Once you are nominated by your faculty representative, you may begin the application process.
3. You will need five letters of recommendation. Recommendations need to be obtained from individuals who know enough about you to assess your personal characteristics, motivation, and potential. See instructions for completing references.
4. Applicants will have to complete a 1000 word personal statement.
