Pursuing the Japanese Minor helps you cultivate a nuanced sense of linguistic, cultural, and societal diversity. Furthermore, having the ability to communicate across languages and cultures ensures that you’re well-positioned for jobs in teaching, translation, international relations in various fields, and more. This minor is frequently combined with majors such as English, Linguistics, History, Computer Science, Psychology, Sociology/Anthropology, Art, Biology, and Communication.
You can study all the way to advanced Japanese to hone your language skills and take Japanese topics courses to learn about Japanese culture and society such as Japanese culture and sociolinguistics, Japanese society and literature, Japanese linguistics and language (translation), and Japanese film. You can further enrich your Japanese studies by taking related courses in history, literature, economics, and art. Your studies of Japan will culminate in presenting research at the Student Research Conference at Truman.
Beyond coursework, you can experience Japanese culture first-hand through study abroad programs. Our student activity club, Hanami, is a crossroads in which students across the globe share their passion for Japan and learn from each other.
