MAE: Student Organizations and Volunteer Opportunities
Future teachers have many opportunities to engage in volunteer activities and pre-professional organizations:
This club promotes literacy on campus and in the community by showing students of all ages how important it is to be literate. They reach out to the community by reading books with grade-school children and holding fundraisers to purchase books that are donated books to local classrooms.
This International Honor Society in Education fosters excellence in education and promotes fellowship among those dedicated to teaching.
MASSE promotes interest in mathematics and science education, disseminates information regarding the preparation of teachers at Truman, and provides an opportunity for personal interaction for students planning to be secondary mathematics or science teachers. The members of MASSE are graduate students in the MAE program in mathematics or science and undergraduate students planning to enter the MAE program.
NEA is a professional organization committed to advancing the cause of public education that has affiliate organizations in every state. Members work at every level of education—from pre-school to university graduate programs.
S-MSTAis devoted to supporting future educators at the college level. This pre-professional club is open to any education student who is planning to teach in Missouri schools. It provides opportunities to learn about the field of education through guest speakers, presentations, community volunteer opportunities, and other activities.
This organization serves as a disability advocacy organization by raising awareness of, education about and serving those with exceptionalities and disabilities. SSEC hosts fundraisers, public speakers, and awareness events to inform the campus and community about disabilities. SSEC is also involved in planning and hosting Special Olympics for Northeast Missouri.
