Receive your 1098T tax form online – it’s easy! You receive this form for tax purposes (includes your billed tuition and scholarships and grants).
Easy to Sign Up:
- Go to truview.truman.edu and log-in.
- In the Tools section Click on Student.
- Click on Student Finances & Student Employment.
- In the Student Finances section, click on 1098T Tax Information Menu.
- Click on 1098T Online Opt In Form.
- Read and review, click “I agree”, then the “Confirm” button.
You will receive an email at your Truman email address when your 1098T is available (by January 31). You’ll have access to your form any time of the day or night once it is created and can print it via TruView when needed. Since your form will be available to you online, a printed copy will not be mailed to your permanent address.
Sign up for the online 1098T form before you give your parent(s) online access to the form.
Easy to Give Parent(s) Online Access:
- Go to truview.truman.edu and log-in.
- In the Tools section click on Everyday Tools.
- Click on Truman Tab Tool.
- In the Update My Personal Information section, select Manage Parent Web Access.
- Click on Assign Parent Web Access
- Select your parent(s) name.
- Enter parents personal email address.
- Select “yes” for access to the 1098T
An email will be sent to you and your parent(s) verifying online access.
Please note that the release of 1098T information is governed by federal privacy laws (FERPA) and cannot be given to parents or tax preparers without the student’s express authorization.
How the parent will view the 1098T:
- Go to truview.truman.edu and log-in.
- Under the Tools menu Click on Parent.
- Click on Parent Tool.
- Select Parent Web Access Menu for Parents.
- Select 1098T Tax Notification.
- Enter the calendar year and Submit.
1098-T Information
The federal tax code, administered by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has provided for a number of education tax benefits. Full information on these tax benefits may be found in IRS Publication 970.
Here is some information on what may be found on the 1098-T form:
Box 1 – Payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses:
- The IRS defines this as “tuition, fees, and course materials required for a student to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution.” Please note that housing costs and books are not included in this amount.
Box 4 – Adjustments made for a prior year:
- If there is a change in enrollment information that creates a change in billed tuition after the previous year’s 1098-T was generated that amount will be recorded here.
Box 5 – Scholarships or grants:
- The IRS defines this as “all payments received from third parties (excluding family members and loan proceeds). This includes payments received from governmental and private entities such as the Department of Defense, civic, and religious organizations, and nonprofit entities.”
Box 6 – Adjustments to scholarships or grants for a prior year:
- If there is a change in scholarship information that creates a change in recorded payments after the previous year’s 1098-T was generated that amount will be recorded here.

Q. What is the 1098-T tax form?
A. The 1098-T tax form is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tuition statement which is intended to help students file their federal income tax return. Truman State University offers the form online to students who have opted-in for this service and mails paper copies to those who did not opt-in for the online version and also reports this information to the IRS. Students need to keep the 1098-T tax form for their records.

Q. I can’t find my 1098-T. Where can I get a copy?
A. If you opted-in to receive your 1098-T online, you can view it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via TruView, Student Tab, Student Tools, Student Finances section, click on ‘1098-T Notification Tax Notification Menu’ and enter the year you want to view. If you did not opt-in for the online version, you can contact the Student Accounts at 660-785-4074.
Q. Are my loans included on the 1098-T?
A. Only scholarship and grant amounts are reported in Box 5 and Box 6. Student loans are not included on the 1098-T.
Q. What expenses qualify for the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning Credits?
A. You should contact your tax preparer or the IRS if you have questions concerning how to use the 1098-T tax form for your taxes.
