Mahlon Barker ’84
Mahlon attended NMSU beginning the fall of 1979 and graduated in May 1984. He was the 4th member of my family to graduate from the school following in the footsteps of sister Cathy ’71, brother Rick ’74 and sister Marti ’78. Mahlon studied mathematics and computer science and was heavily involved in the music department as one of the original members of the Showboat Gamblers marching Band. He was the Drum Major in 1982 and was also a part of jazz ensembles and wonderful symphony as a Trombone player. Mahlon was also a member of Delta Chi and of Phi Mu Alpha.
Mahlon is married to fellow alum Sandy (Sloan) Barker and has four grown sons – Christopher, Jacob, Matthew and Benjamin who is also a Truman alum.
Mahlon has lived in central Iowa since graduation, working the past 35 years in IT service management for a major insurance company and now for Corteva Agriscience. For leisure he volunteers with the Boy Scouts, directs a high school jazz ensemble, loves to camp, brew his own beer and cook.
